Happy 2019! The start of a new year means reflecting on the year that has passed and looking at how you can spark some positive change in order to have a happy and healthy year ahead. As parents, you may find yourselves looking back on the year and how things have gone with you and your family. Maybe you have some things you’d like to change about your parenting style, your child’s behavior, your busy schedule, whatever it is, it’s always a good idea to set some resolutions for yourself and your family so that you can move in a positive direction in 2019.
1. Learn to Say No
As a busy parent, it’s easy to overcommit and overexert yourself. It can be a lot to juggle work, your household, and your family. One resolution idea for 2019 is to learn to say no. Maybe your coworker asked you to take over a project for them or your Parent Teacher Association needs someone to bake cookies for this month’s meeting, whatever it is in your life, saying no can be your greatest weapon in fighting stress.
2. Learn to Say Yes
On the contrary, learning to say yes to spending quality time with your family and children is an easy new year’s resolution you can make. Next time your child asks you to join in in their make-believe game of princess, say yes! When your partner asks you to take a family walk around the neighborhood, but there’s a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, forget the dishes! Saying yes to quality family moments is an easy way to invoke positive change in the new year.
3. Worry Less
Worrying can take an emotional and physical toll on anyone, especially parents. This year, try to worry less when it comes to your children. Of course, their safety is the number one priority to you, but some things are out of your control and worrying about the minutia can add unnecessary stress to your life. Try focusing on how you can make your child’s world safer and then let them explore without worrying too much.
4. Schedule Yearly Exams Early
An easy way to add some organization to your life in this new year is to schedule all of your family’s appointments early. Getting something set and on your calendar will allow you to focus on other aspects of your life and not worry about when your child is due for their annual physical. Set some time aside early in this new year to organize all the yearly appointments you need to schedule.
