Learn the Basics and Beyond
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately 6 months followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least 2 years and beyond as mutually desired.
There are numerous benefits to breastfeeding both for Mom and baby. Studies have shown that breastfeeding can lower your child’s risk for cancer, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), obesity, ear infections, diabetes, asthma, respiratory infections, celiac disease and meningitis. It can even raise your child’s IQ. It promotes bonding. It reduces the risk for breast and ovarian cancer for Mom. It also lowers Mom’s risk for postpartum depression, stroke and heart attack.
